They develop an understanding of the ways in which language operates as a social process and how to use language in a variety of forms and situations. They learn to speak, listen, view, read and write effectively for a range of different purposes.

The literacy focus for Pre-Kindy and Kindergarten children is to help them develop:

  • a love of reading and writing
  • an understanding that print conveys meaning
  • a link between spoken and written language
  • listening and speaking skills

Pre-Primary children learn vital early literacy skills through hands-on and interactive learning experiences with a focus on developing the children’s knowledge, understanding and skills in listening, speaking, reading and writing.

Aranmore Catholic Primary School has a well-resourced library which complements the classroom programme.
The children from Kindy – Year 6 have a weekly library lesson with the Teacher Librarian in the Library which includes the opportunity for them to borrow books.
